Who is OPUS XVI?

Opus XVI Chamber Choir was founded in September 1979 by Colin Nicholls, and we gave our first concert on St Cecilia’s Day in November of that year. The choir's name comes from the fact that there were originally sixteen members.

WHAT IS A CHAMBER CHOIR?

A chamber choir is a small to medium-sized vocal ensemble that typically consists of 8 to 40 singers. It is distinguished by its intimate size, which allows for greater precision, blend, and flexibility than larger choirs. Chamber choirs usually perform a cappella or with minimal accompaniment, and their repertoire often includes:

  • Classical and contemporary choral works;
  • Sacred and secular music;
  • Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic, and modern composition.

Because of their size, chamber choirs often focus on refined musical expression and are capable of performing complex or delicate pieces that require close vocal interaction. They are frequently used in concert settings, church services, or professional music recordings.
